How to Keep Your VCT Flooring at It’s Best

Vinyl Composite Tile (VCT) flooring is a popular choice for commercial and residential spaces due to its durability and affordability. To keep your VCT flooring looking its best, follow these maintenance steps:

Regular Cleaning:

  • Sweep or Vacuum: Use a soft-bristle broom, dust mop, or vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove loose dirt and debris regularly. This prevents particles from scratching the surface when walked on.

  • Damp Mopping: Damp mop the floor using a solution of mild pH-neutral cleaner and water. Avoid using harsh chemicals, as they can damage the floor's finish over time. Dilute the cleaner according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Ongoing Maintenance:

  • Regular Buffing: Depending on the level of foot traffic, buff the floor periodically to restore its shine. Buffing can help maintain the appearance of the finish and reduce the need for frequent stripping.

  • Use Walk-Off Mats: Place walk-off mats or rugs at entrances to trap dirt and moisture before they reach the VCT flooring. This prevents abrasive particles from causing premature wear.

  • Furniture Pads: Attach felt or rubber pads to the legs of furniture to prevent scratching and scuffing when moving them.

Tips to Remember:

  • Avoid Excessive Moisture: While VCT is water-resistant, excess moisture can still damage the adhesive underneath. Wipe up spills promptly and avoid using excessive water during cleaning.

  • Protect High-Traffic Areas: Place mats or runners in areas with heavy foot traffic, such as hallways or entryways, to minimize wear and tear.

  • Regular Inspections: Periodically inspect the flooring for signs of wear, damage, or areas where the finish is wearing thin. Address these issues promptly to prevent further damage.

  • Follow Manufacturer's Recommendations: Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines for cleaning, maintenance, and products to use. Different brands of VCT flooring might have specific care instructions.
